LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise list includes several environmental roles

LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise: Environmental roles among fastest growing jobs

Environmental officer and energy manager are included in the top ten of LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise list for 2025.

LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise list, which is produced annually using exclusive LinkedIn data, identifies those areas of opportunity for jobseekers and career-builders by revealing the 25 fastest-growing jobs over the past three years. Previous lists have analysed a five-year period but acknowledging the “rapid change” in the jobs market LinkedIn has shortened the timespan it covers in 2025.

The top four positions, respectively, are artificial intelligence (AI) engineer, home health aide, aircraft mechanic, and data governance manager. Environmental officer ranks fifth.

LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise definition of an environmental officer is someone who monitors and enforces environmental regulations to protect natural resources and public health. Most common skills required for the job include environmental compliance, environmental awareness, and environmental management systems. Retail is not yet one of the most common industries with this role – leading the way are the business consulting & services, transportation equipment manufacturing, and not-for-profit sectors.

Current gender distribution for environmental officers is 53% female and 47% male.

The other sustainability-related role in the top ten, energy manager, ranked eighth on the list. The role is defined as someone who develops and implements strategies to optimise energy use and reduce costs within an organisation, and the most common skills for the position are energy management, energy efficiency, and renewable energy knowledge.

The methodology behind the research involved LinkedIn Economic Graph researchers examining millions of jobs started by LinkedIn members from 1 January 2022 to 31 July 2024 to calculate a growth rate for each job title. To be ranked, a job title needed to see positive growth across our membership base and sufficient job postings in the past year, as well as have grown to a “meaningful size” by 2024.

LinkedIn said: “Professionals are navigating rapid change, and staying ahead of the curve is no easy feat.

“As AI continues to transform the way people hire and get hired in 2025, those who adapt by embracing new skills, refining their expertise and keeping an open mind to emerging opportunities will set themselves up for success.”

Sustainability manager was one of the fastest growing job roles in 2022, as reported by Green Retail World at the time.
