Salvation Army is offering free school uniform in its stores across the UK

Free school uniform: Salvation Army charity shops to give away thousands of items

Hundreds of Salvation Army charity shops across the UK are preparing to give away thousands of free school uniform items this summer, with the initiative set to exceed the 29,000 garments distributed to families during last year’s back-to-school campaign.

The giveaway, organised by Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), began on Monday 29 June in more than 250 participating charity shops. In addition, Salvation Army churches and community centres nationwide will host free school uniform pop-up shops to help families prepare for the new academic year.

Of course, charity shops are a key part of the circular economy, giving people an option to donate unwanted items to ensure they have another life and aren’t simply sent to landfill or incineration.

The free school uniform offer includes good-quality pre-loved items donated by local communities, alongside thousands of brand-new garments provided by a corporate donor. Available items include tops, bottoms, jumpers and cardigans, with stock offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Nicola Crawford, director of retail at SATCoL, said: “Supporting families and easing the cost of school uniforms is incredibly important to us. Thanks to generous donations from members of the public and local schools, we’re able to provide a positive and accessible shopping experience for parents, guardians and children.”

Garry Smith, director of mission at SATCoL, added: “No child should start school without essentials, and we want to ease the burden for families who have a big expense at this time of year. Our shops and donation centres act as community hubs and are an extension of Salvation Army mission. Conveniently located, our stores can easily collect and distribute school uniform items and help families who need support.”

Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact their nearest Salvation Army charity shop to check availability before visiting, as all items are available while stocks last.
