The UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain, Aldi, has said it will install solar panels at a further 62 stores this year.
The move continues the expansion of its solar panel rollout, which has already involved installation at more than 470 stores across its UK estate. The company is investing £8.4 million in 2025-2026 to install solar panels at 100 stores.
According to Aldi, each installation can provide up to 30% of a store’s annual energy requirements – and this focus on renewables means the retailer can generate more of its electricity on site while strengthening energy resilience in a volatile market.
Next up on the list of Aldi UK stores to install solar panels include Stratford-upon-Avon, Maghull, Northampton and Wrexham.
In February, Aldi UK announced it was investing more than £300 million in its existing UK store throughout 2026, with features focused on energy efficiency part of the plans.
Introducing more sustainable options in its stores is a key target for the business, including the implementation of fridge doors to reduce energy use, as well as using natural refrigerants to help cut carbon emissions. Aside from sustainability features, Aldi is also updating fixtures and signage, and redesigning store layouts.
Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, commented: “We’ve made significant progress over the past year, and we are advancing the next phase of our solar rollout across even more stores in 2026.
“The programme has expanded to cover even more sites than originally planned, and through ongoing investment in our estate, we’re making our operations more resilient while ensuring we continue to deliver great value for customers in a more sustainable way.”
