Menswear for hire: John Lewis expands Hurr fashion rental partnership

Department store chain John Lewis has expanded its Hurr fashion rental partnership to cover menswear.

As part of move towards a more circular business model, the retailer is offering menswear to rent from brands such as Boss Tailoring, Charles Tyrwhitt, and Hay Life. John Lewis said the launch follows “the huge success” of its womenswear rental platform, which was unveiled in 2022.

John Lewis is following the data too, with the decision to grow the Hurr fashion rental offering coming after searches for ‘Mens Rental’ consistently appeared in the top 30 search terms on its website over the past 18 months. And, according to The Global Online Rental Report, the global menswear rental industry is predicted to be worth $3 billion by 2027.

John Lewis commercial director, Kathleen Mitchell, remarked: “We’re unique on the high street to be able to offer the widest range of multiple brands to rent from everyday suits to more premium brands and styles.

“A perfect solution for a last minute dinner party or day at the races. This is just the beginning of menswear rental and we’re really excited to see it grow.”

John Lewis’s fashion rental womenswear has seen a 52% increase in members and a 40% increase of rentals year on year, according to data from April, and the site has expanded into maternity wear, ski wear, and wedding dresses. The menswear rental will sit alongside womenswear, as part of the existing Hurr fashion rental tie-up.

Hurr CEO Victoria Prew commented: “As a category, menswear is very much undiscovered in rental and this is a unique opportunity for us with incredible potential to shift consumer behaviour towards smarter fashion choices.”

Rental prices start from £40 for a four-day rental for a dinner jacket and trousers, while garments can be hired for four, eight, 16 or 30 days with next-day delivery an option for customers if needed. Hurr – via Oxwash responsible laundry services – dry cleans the products after each use.
