UK DRS 2027: Certified reverse vending machines list published

Exchange For Change has published the first list of certified reverse vending machines (RVMs) approved for use in the UK Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), giving retailers greater certainty as they prepare for the initiative’s launch on 1 October 2027.

The industry-led organisation delivering the scheme said certification confirms that machines meet the technical specification required to operate within the DRS, following a rigorous assessment process.

Retailers considering purchasing or leasing an RVM are advised to consult the approved supplier list before selecting a model. The list will be updated as further machines complete certification, with suppliers able to submit equipment for assessment on an ongoing basis.

Tomra, RVM Systems, EcoVend, Recyclever, Envipco, Sielaff, and Ripet are the names on the initial certified list.

The independent certification process examines 77 separate requirements, covering areas including eligible container identification and acceptance, fraud prevention, connectivity with scheme systems, accessibility and the secure handling of transaction data.

Alongside the certified machine list, Exchange For Change has published new RVM Artwork Guidance, setting out approved branding, signage and consumer instructions for certified models.

The guidance is intended to create a consistent and recognisable appearance across return points, helping consumers identify where containers can be returned and redeem their 20p deposit on returned packaging.

Russell Davies, CEO of Exchange For Change, said the publication marked an important step in helping retailers prepare for the scheme.

“Certification provides confidence that approved machines have met the requirements needed to operate within the scheme and gives retailers greater certainty as they consider their options,” he explained.

Davies added that the list would help retailers of all sizes make informed decisions, while the artwork guidance would allow scheme branding to sit alongside individual retailers’ own identities.

The announcement forms part of Exchange For Change’s wider programme of retailer support ahead of the DRS launch. This includes guidance on return point exemptions and grant funding to help eligible small independent retailers purchase an RVM.

Travis Way, managing director at EcoVend, which is part of Reconomy Group, said: “The publication of the first certified RVM list gives retailers greater clarity as they prepare for the DRS.

“With less than a year to go until launch, retailers should now be assessing their store footprint, considering how returns will fit into day-to-day operations and making sure staff are trained and ready to manage the process. Getting these practicalities in place early will be key to ensuring a smooth transition when the scheme goes live.”

He added: “A reliable, accessible network of return points will be key to encouraging participation, capturing more valuable materials for recycling and delivering the environmental benefits the scheme is designed to achieve.”
