UK fashion and homeware retailer Matalan has established a partnership with Company Shop Group, helping the business to redistribute its surplus stock.
Head of environmental, social, & governance (ESG) at Matalan, Verity Warnecke, announced the tie-up on LinkedIn. At a time of major change at the business, including a rebrand, the revamp of its app and loyalty scheme, and the refresh of its store estate, the retailer is still looking to build momentum with its sustainability strategy.
Matalan received a £25 million funding in April from its main investors Invesco, Tresidor, Man Group, and Napier Park, to help support the current turnaround.
Warnecke, who assumed the lead ESG role earlier this year, wrote of the Company Shop move: “This partnership is all about creating positive environmental and social impact for our colleagues and communities, while supporting our sustainability goals.
“By redistributing surplus stock, we’re reducing waste and keeping perfectly good products out of landfill, contributing to a more sustainable future.”
She added, as part of the move, Matalan staff will gain access to affordable essentials from its overstock.
New tech
Company Shop Group announced in June that it had partnered with Dexory, a provider of warehouse visibility and automation tools. The aim is to transform inventory accuracy, reduce waste, and improve product flow throughout its ambient warehouse operations in Barnsley.
The South Yorkshire distribution centre holds a range of surplus stock across food, homeware, personal, and pet categories from a wide range of retailers and brands.
The group said that, historically, inaccuracies in stock levels led to some picking and dispatch delays. The organisation said it can now track stock with a level of accuracy and speed not previously possible.
