Amazon launches Second Chance Deals Days

Second Chance Deal Days: Amazon kick-starts second-hand promotional event

Retail and tech powerhouse Amazon has launched Second Chance Deals Days – a week-long promotional event for its second-hand lines.

Running between 3-9 September, the Second Chance Deal Days campaign is providing consumers with used and refurbished products at discounts of up to 50% off recommended retail prices. Customers on the Amazon site are alerted to whether a product is new or used as they search.

During the Second Chance Deal Days event, UK customers will be able to find discounted items across all major categories, and the products available include Xbox Series X, Apple AirPods, and Remington hair straighteners.

Aside from this marketing campaign, which is part of the company’s recent strategy to raise the profile of its pre-loved offering, Amazon resells used, returned, and refurbished items through two main programmes: Amazon Resale and Amazon Renewed.

According to recent research carried out by the Centre for Economics Business Research (CEBR) and commissioned by Amazon, two-thirds of Brits are now buying second-hand, driven by cost of living, expanded product selection, and environmental concerns.

John Boumphrey, Amazon UK country manager, commented: “We’ve seen that once customers experience the value and quality of these products, they become confident second-chance shoppers, saving money along the way and helping to extend product lifecycles.

“Our dedicated teams check every returned product. Customers can be assured that any used product they buy meets our quality standards and comes with Amazon’s customer service and return policies.”

Amazon said its priority is to help customers find the right product the first time, thereby avoiding returns. But by putting repair and resale operations in place, it aims to keep products in circulation for longer and attempt to minimise waste.

Sam Littlejohn, head of returns and repairs at Amazon Europe, said: “If a product can have a useful purpose, we want it to have a second chance.”
