Recommerce marketplace Vinted is the company that sells the most clothing in France by volume, according to new research from the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM).
The Lithuania-based second-hand platform that received a €5 billion valuation in October 2024 was ranked number one in the first quarter of 2025 in the latest IFM fashion industry barometer, above Amazon and Kiabi which positioned second and third respectively.
The two China-based and fast growing globally fashion platforms Shein and Temu were ranked fifth and 24th respectively. The full top ten were, as follows:
- Vinted
- Amazon
- Kiabi
- Decathlon
- Shein
- H&M
- Intersport
- Auchan
- Carrefour
- Leclerc
The IFM report also showed re-sale fashion now makes up 10.9% of all clothing sales in France, while for Gen Z, the share is even higher at 16.3%.
Vinted’s top ranking in France in the first quarter has stirred up much commentary among the sustainability community.
On LinkedIn, Tessa Clarke, co-founder & CEO of food redistribution service Olio, and circular economy champion, said Vinted has been able to make second-hand first choice by creating an “endless” supply of goods, offering “pain-free shipping” with smooth logistics, and “no friction for sellers”.
“Their revenue model charges buyers, so listing is free and effortless for anyone,” she says.
“This is what it looks like when a business model aligns with both consumer desire and planetary limits.”
In a note of caution, Clarke referenced how Vinted had made second-hand “so seamless that it may not be slowing down the brand-new juggernaut at all”.
“In fact, some system thinkers worry it’s doing the opposite – encouraging more new purchases because people know they can easily claw back some cash by re-selling later.”
A second-hand platform topping the fashion shopping rankings in a major European retail nation is certainly a landmark moment of consideration for the sustainability in retail community.

Delighted to know Vinted are so successful.
95% of my clothes are second hand and have been for years.
Good second hand (a bargain ) is more exciting. When I say second hand very often my clothes are new donated to charity shops by retail stores.
The only problem I have is my four floor to ceiling wardrobes are bulging with clothes etc.,
