John Lewis repair is now available in the department store chain’s shops across the UK.
A trial in five stores which began in July 2024 proved successful, prompting the retailer to introduce the offering to all John Lewis shops with the exception of the sites in Swindon and London’s Canary Wharf.
The John Lewis repair service is run in partnership with Timpson Group-owned Johnsons, and covers cleaning, repair, and alterations of garments. Dry cleaning and handbag restoration is included, as is repair and cleaning of homeware items such as duvets, bedding, curtains and rug cleaning.
John Lewis said the most popular services from the trial were minor rip and seam repairs, which would suggest there is customer demand for fixing wear and tear of everyday items. Trouser alterations were also popular, while the retailer said one of its success stories was the restoration of a Chanel bag “to near new condition within days”.
The retailer also suggested this plays into general consumer trends, with interest growing in haberdashery accessories and searches for John Lewis sewing machines up 50% year on year showing there’s a focus on mending.
My John Lewis loyalty members will be able to claim 5% off all single repair services as a continuous offer.
Katie Papakonstantinou, director of services & hospitality at John Lewis, commented: “John Lewis has always been committed to providing a brilliant retail experience for customers, and repair adds another dimension to that.
“The great thing about repair is it works for the old and the new. Whether you need something tailored to fit you better or want to give your mum’s old handbag a new life, we’ve made it easy to restore treasured products.”
Marija Rompani, director of ethics & sustainability at parent group the John Lewis Partnership, added: “We’re still learning about which circular economy models work so it’s great when a trial delivers positive results and shows us how we can make it effective at scale.
“Repair is a crucial part of the circular economy and mirrors our commitment to designing items with quality and longevity in mind, as part of our circular strategy.”
