Caffe Nero opts for Octopus's Electric Match tariff

Electric match: Caffè Nero becomes Octopus Energy’s biggest business customer

Coffee chain Caffè Nero is in the process of switching 630 stores in the UK to energy company Octopus’s ‘Electric Match’ tariff as part of its efforts to rely more on renewables.

Hundreds of Caffè Nero fascia stores, as well as its Roastery and the shops it owns under different brands such as Harris+Hoole and Coffee#1, are making the move to Electric Match.

It means the Caffè Nero Group’s energy will be sourced from three British solar and wind farms in Yorkshire, Wales, and Lincolnshire, all of which are managed by Octopus Energy’s generation arm.

Offering half-hourly price updates, the Electric Match tariff supported by Octopus’s Kraken platform will give Caffè Nero a transparent and real-time cost of energy, which will often be below wholesale prices.

The aim is to tap into wind and solar power supplies when it is cheapest, meaning Caffè Nero can use power optimally and drive savings across its business, according to Octopus which estimates the retailer’s annual UK electricity bills in could reduce by up to 17% as a result of the partnership.

Using British green energy sites will also contribute to reducing emissions in Caffè Nero’s Scope 2 reporting.

The energy tie-up builds on an existing marketing relationship between Octopus Energy and Caffè Nero which gives the former’s customers who use the ‘Octoplus’ rewards scheme a chance to accrue complimentary coffees.

Will Stratton-Morris, Caffè Nero UK CEO, said: “I’m delighted we’ve strengthened our strategic partnership with Octopus Energy.

“The response to the rewards programme we launched earlier this year has been hugely positive and it’s great to be able to work together further to drive an environmental benefit to our customers and teams. I’m excited about where this partnership can lead.”

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy for Business, commented: “Caffè Nero’s stores have been at the forefront of the coffee market for decades and we are thrilled to be strengthening our existing partnership with them. Through our ‘Electric Match’ tariff, we’re not only supplying Caffè Nero with some of the cheapest and greenest homegrown power, we’re also brewing up major savings for them.”
