Mango offering sustainability training

‘Transfer of knowledge’: Mango offers sustainability training to designers and buyers

Fashion retailer Mango is set to offer sustainability training to its staff following a tie-up with Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda de Madrid (CSDMM), an institution linked to the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

More than 250 employees, including those in design, buying, and quality assessment, are set to receive sustainability training as part of the collaboration.

Mango and the CSDMM-UPM will develop a formal training programme to run throughout 2024, with the aim of boosting education in areas such as recycling processes, more sustainable materials and fibres, certifications and labelling, and the application of circularity criteria in the design of collections.

The sustainability training sessions will include speeches, informal talks, and roundtables, led by renowned experts from the sector and course professors from the CSDMM-UPM, including Luis Barros Presedo, an expert in sustainable development and supply chains, and consultant on sustainable transformation for multinationals and small and medium-sized companies.

Mango’s core three aims of the new arrangement are to establish relationships and alliances with the academic world, strengthen the differentiated value proposition of professional development and benefits for its employees, and to take a major step forward in its sustainability strategy.

Other programme participants include:

  • Román Padín, doctor in contemporary art and cultural director specialising in fashion and eco-design
  • Gemma Gómez, professor & consultant, and founder of the Slow Fashion Next training platform
  • Javier Plazas, a professor associated to the IE School, and specialist in digital transformation, corporate communication, and management
  • Tania Rodríguez, an expert in the fashion sector in areas such as purchasing, production, and business development
  • Mercedes Rodríguez, assistant director & professor of the CSDMM-UPM.

Andrés Fernández, sustainability & sourcing director at Mango, said: “For us, it is an honour to establish an alliance with the CSDMM, a leading institution in the fashion industry with an extensive knowledge of sustainability.

“I am convinced that with their expertise we will advance towards a more sustainable collection, reduce our impact on the planet and improve our impact on society.”

Guillermo Cisneros, Dean of the UPM, added: “One of the goals of our university is to improve society through the generation and transfer of knowledge and the training of future professionals.

“To achieve this, we promote alliances with engineering, architecture, sport and fashion institutions and enterprises, and in this specific case, with Mango.”

He called the partnership “an excellent opportunity to continue to work closely with industry and lead social change from a sector such as fashion, which is so important for our country”.
