Exchange for Change: UK deposit return scheme operator gets a rebrand

The new trading name for the UK Deposit Management Organisation (UK DMO), the not-for-profit body established to design and deliver the deposit return scheme (DRS) across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, is Exchange for Change.

According to the organisation, which recently completed the recruitment of its senior team tasked with delivering the DRS from October 2027, the new name captures the essence of the scheme: “helping people return empty drinks containers and reclaim their deposit”.

The aim of the DRS is to deliver cleaner streets, reduce waste and create better recycling facilities in the UK – with those consumers returning packaging after it has been used able to recoup the deposit they paid on metal and plastic containers at the point of their drinks purchase.

A brand icon will now appear on every bottle, can and return point associated with the scheme – and Exchange for Change worked with Uncommon Creative Studio on the development of this new identity. The icon shows bottles and cans turning into coins, and is designed “to be instantly recognisable in households, shops and communities, and to reflect the full range of eligible containers within the scheme”.

The operator said the next stage of its work is to support producers, retailers, wholesalers, and hospitality companies get ready for the introduction of the DRS, which is now only 21 months away.

It noted that formal issuance of the scheme logo and detailed guidance on how and when to apply it, including placement, sizing, and approved formats and colours, will be shared in the coming weeks to help businesses prepare their own artwork updates ahead of the scheme’s introduction.

Exchange for Change CEO Russell Davies, who started his role at the turn of the year, commented: “Our new name reflects what this scheme is all about, and that’s making a simple change that has the power to transform streets, communities and recycling habits across the UK.”
