Supplier decarbonisation is the name of the game in retail

LESS is more? Lagardère Travel Retail launches supplier decarbonisation platform

Lagardère Travel Retail has launched a platform that enables it to report and track carbon data across its retail network and supplier base.

Coordinated by Perifem and the Fédération du Commerce et de la Distribution, the Low Emission Sustainable Sourcing (LESS) platform is being used by nine founding retailers, including Carrefour, E.Leclerc, and Metro France, helping drive transparency across the retail supply chain.

First announced in July, the network already has 150 suppliers participating. It is powered by OpenClimat, and the aim of those deploying it is to decarbonise their own operations and those of their suppliers. With more than 90% of retail-related emissions materialising further upstream in the supply chain in so-called Scope 3, those involved in this initiative are hoping it will support more effective, data-driven decarbonisation.

Arnaud Rolland, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Lagardère Travel Retail, said: “The launch of LESS transforms an ambitious idea into concrete action.

“By joining forces with our peers and partners, we’re building a unified approach that will enable the entire industry to move faster and further in its decarbonisation journey.”

Validated by the French Competition Authority, LESS is open to all French and European retailers and foodservice operators. A stakeholder committee, involving Perifem, FCD, and key industry federations has been created to guide and strengthen its collective governance.

LESS is jointly funded by participating retailers and suppliers. Meanwhile, OpenClimat is supported by a technical expert committee, including Deloitte, software company Sweep, and carbon footprint measurement organisation FoodPilot.
