Finisterre aims to adopt circular business models

Revive: Finisterre launches range made from reclaimed wool

Outdoor retailer Finisterre has launched a range made from reclaimed wool, which is part of a closed-loop textile recycling project it has been involved in alongside Yorkshire-based wool recycler Iinouiio.

Like John Lewis which released a range of a similar nature alongside Iinouiio earlier this year, Finisterre is testing the waters with this manufacturing process – and has started by introducing two capsules: The Dr. John Revive Jumper and The Dr. John Revive Beanie. It is calling the range ‘Revive’.

As is widely publicised, fashion takes its toll on the environment and has a significant end-of-life waste issue, but Finisterre said it is committed to reducing its impact through circular design principles – and is actively considering disassembly, recyclability and end-of-life solutions throughout the design process. The project with Iinouiio aims to transform end-of-life Finisterre wool products into new, high-quality yarn in the UK.

Each piece in the capsule is made from 80% pre-consumer recycled wool, and 20% post-consumer recycled wool. The Revive range also includes 5% Finisterre feedstock from the knitwear stored with its clothing takeback partner, Reskinned.

The Dr John, whose name is referenced in the new range, is Dr John Parkinson, who is a textile recycling expert based in Yorkshire whose Iinouiio business has been recycling wool garments into yarn for decades. The company supports more circular processes across the knitwear industry.

Dr Parkinson said: “Finisterre may still be navigating how to adjust working procedures for reclaimed materials, but what stands out is their openness to listen and figure it out.

“Working with smaller brands has been more fulfilling than collaborating with the ‘giants,’ as they truly value UK manufacturing and have a decision-making process that aligns with how we work at Iinouiio. I’m hopeful this project will inspire greater collaboration, helping turn what is often considered waste into valuable resources that can be reborn as new products.”

Finisterre’s design manager, Rose Savidge, added: “This collection represents a step toward a truly circular future for Finisterre.

“It’s innovative, scalable, and reflects our commitment to driving change through responsible design.”

The new range is available in select Finisterre stores in the UK. Read more about Finisterre on Green Retail World.
