UK Deposit Management Organisation is looking for leaders

‘Ending a throwaway society’: UK Deposit Management Organisation seeks senior team

The body appointed to deliver and operate a UK deposit return scheme (DRS), UK Deposit Management Organisation, is on the hunt for a senior team.

Executive recruitment company Russell Reynolds is leading the search for a chief executive officer, chief financial officer, independent chair, and two independent non-executive directors.

Briefed by the Deposit Management Organisation steering committee, which includes representatives from across the world of business who represent the companies that will be impacted by the DRS, Russell Reynolds has set a 4 June deadline for applications.

Time is of the essence with the delayed roll out of the DRS now set for October 2027, at which point consumers will have a financial incentive to return empty containers to a collection point, such as at their local supermarket, so that the bottle or can be recycled. The aim of the scheme is to bring an end to the throwaway society, improve recycle rates, and reduce litter.

DRS programmes are already in operation in more than 50 countries, with people using them picking up the deposit they initially paid as part of the purchase of their drink in plastic or aluminium container.

The Deposit Management Organisation (DMO) will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the scheme, looking after logistics, financial flows, fraud prevention strategy, and regulatory compliance to maximise the effectiveness of the programme. It is hoped the not-for-profit group will have a powerful impact in waste and carbon reduction as it serves between government, industry, and the public.

In the job description for the senior roles, Russell Reynolds said: “This group of individuals will bring together a broad range of skills and experiences to successfully deliver the DMO’s objectives, and will be representative of the diversity of the consumers, businesses and nations that the DMO will serve.”
