Health and beauty retailer Boots’ Irish arm has announced its packaging recycling scheme has now had more than 100,000 product scans.
The ‘Recycle at Boots’ initiative was only launched last year, so the landmark figure highlights the popularity of the packaging recycling scheme among the retailer’s shoppers.
Available in 50 stores in Ireland, the packaging recycling scheme allows consumers to bring in up to five empty bottles or make-up dispersers in return for Boots Advantage Points on future purchases. The idea is to enable plastic items that aren’t collected at curbside to be diverted from landfill – these materials include packaging for beauty, health, wellness, and dental products from any brand.
The scheme was initially launched in Boots UK in 2020, where more than a million pieces of packaging have been recycled thanks to its presence in more than 700 stores.
Consumers wishing to use the scheme must register on Boots’ Scan2Recycle website and log their five empties from home, before locating their nearest drop-off point and depositing the items via a scan of the QR code. To incentivise people to use these facilities and register for the system, people who scan to recycle will receive 500 Boots Advantage Card points when they spend €10 in store.
Boots works with Metrisk, which operates the Scan2Recycle technology. MyGroup, which is based in Hull in the UK, is the waste management company that collects the packaging before processing it and making it into other useful products such as building materials and garden furniture.
Boots’s Ireland held its annual ESG [environmental, social, and governance] Champions Day in Dublin at the start of June. Team members from stores, including dedicated ‘ESG champions’ who are tasked with driving the retailer’s environmental ambitions at a shop level across the country, gathered with the leadership team to reflect and plan on strategy.
