Claire’s Accessories, Lush, and Just Eat are among the reported retailers taking part in the Veganuary Workplace Challenge this month.
Veganuary – the global organisation encouraging people to try vegan for January and beyond – said this week hundreds of businesses are urging staff to embark on Veganuary as part of their efforts to contribute to a more sustainable society.
Last year, Oxford University led research that showed eating a vegan diet hugely reduces the damage to the environment caused by food production. In what is arguably the most comprehensive analysis on this subject to date, the report published in the journal Nature Food shows vegan diets resulted in 75% less climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use than diets in which more than 100g of meat a day was eaten.
There were several other environmental benefits identified as part of a vegan diet, according to the report. The study analysed the real diets of 55,000 people in the UK and used data from 38,000 farms in 119 countries.
With new findings on environmental impacts emerging all the time, more and more people are considering how their diets contribute to global heating. Against this backdrop, Veganuary said software companies Salesforce and Docusign, five NHS Trusts, and Suffolk, North Herts and Tameside Councils have joined the aforementioned retailers in encouraging employees to take on the Veganuary Workplace Challenge in 2024.
Robert Frank, Early Leaders Employee Resource Group community lead at Claire’s Accessories, said: “We are excited to get involved this year and run our first ever Veganuary Workplace Challenge.
“Led by our Early Leaders Employee Resource Group, this initiative further strengthens our commitment to becoming a more sustainable organisation. We look forward to putting on weekly sessions at our UK head office throughout the month of January and explore how we can make real change through our dietary choices.”
Veganuary is free to join, and people can sign up at veganuary.com to receive a seven-day meal plan, celebrity cookbook, an official Veganuary starter kit and 31 daily emails packed which include recipes and dietary advice.
